Fouad Ali’s first major international wrestling medal for Egypt (then competing as the United Arab Republic due to its union with Syria) came at the 1961 Arab Games, when he won the flyweight, Greco-Roman tournament, a division in which he been runner-up at the national championships one year earlier. He then won that event at the 1963 Mediterranean Games before being selected to compete at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. There, he was defeated in both of his bouts and eliminated. In 1965 he defended his title at the Arab Games and then participated in his last major international tournament in 1966, when he was Egypt’s representative for his event at the World Championships.
