Biography

Tatu Kolehmainen, who represented Helsingin Jyry, participated in the Greco-Roman wrestling 67.5 kg class of the 1912 Stockholm Olympics. He advanced to the sixth round against Russia’s Oskar Kaplur, but both were disqualified in the match for wrestling too passively. One year before, he had been sixth in the unofficial World Championships in Helsinki. In 1912 and 1913, he won the Finnish championships in the 66.5 kg division, at the time the lowest contested in Finland. In 1914, Kolehmainen became a professional wrestler after a dispute with his club Jyry of Helsinki.

In the Finnish civil war of 1918, the laborer from Helsinki fought in the famous Jyry company of the Red Guards and was shot in the battles fought in Leukamaa near Lempäälä, on April 7. He was the only Olympian who died on the side of the Reds in the Civil War.
