Kaarlo Koskelo had a very brief wrestling career, which was interrupted by World War I. The 1912 Olympic featherweight title is the only major international title that Koskelo earned and, during his career, he never won a Finnish title. After fighting in the Finnish Civil War as the commander of the Red Guards at the Savitaipale front in 1918, Koskelo emigrated to the United States via Russia in 1919. He settled in Astoria, Oregon, where he founded the “Union Steam Bath” sauna company and became a prominent local businessman. The facility was opened in 1928 and was later included in the National Register of Historic Places.
