Biography

Paul Tirkkonen, like his brother Theodor, was already a veteran, when he competed in the Greco-Roman lightweight division at the Stockholm Olympics. He withdrew from the competition after losing to Sweden’s future silver medalist Gustaf Malmström.

His first major achievements came as early as 1906 and in 1907, when he placed 3rd and 2nd, respectively, in the < 70 kg class at the Finnish Championships. In 1911, he won bronze at the unofficial World Championships in Helsinki in the < 67 kg division.
