Biography

Pertti Ukkola was the world’s leading Greco-Roman bantamweight wrestler in the middle of the 1970s. Ukkola, who took up wrestling in 1960, made his international début at the 1970 European Championships and, during his career, competed at three Olympics (1972, 1976, 1980), five World Championships (1974, 1975, 1977, 1978, 1981), and three European Championships (1970, 1973, 1977). Ukkola was the 1976 Greco-Roman Olympic champion and 1977 World and European Champion. He also won World Championship bronze in 1975 and 1981, Nordic titles in 1971-73 and 1976, Finnish flyweight titles in 1968 and 1969 and Finnish bantamweight titles in 1971-74, 1977 and 1980. Ukkola was named as the best Finnish athlete of the year in 1977. After finishing his wrestling career, Ukkola worked as a wrestling coach.
