Emil Westerlund did not lose a bout in the middleweight A (< 75 kg) division at the 1912 Olympics but failed to further qualify after two passivity “draws”. In 1912, these were considered losses for both athletes involved. Thus, he was eliminated after round 5. He reappeared on the Olympic stage in 1920, this time in the light-heavyweight (< 82.5 kg) class, but lost in the quarterfinal against US wrestler Walter Maurer. Unlike his brothers Edvard and Kalle Westerlund, Emil did not win an Olympic medal.
In 1909 and 1912, Emil Westerlund claimed two national titles in the < 83 kg division. In the 1930s, he was a member of the board of the Finnish Wrestling Federation.
