Alan Butts took up wrestling in 1957 shortly before his 17th birthday. He weighed around 15 stone at the time and had little or no exercise, so he went to the Birmingham Athletic Institute and took up wrestling in an effort to lose weight. A middleweight, Butts won his only British title in 1960 and subsequently went to the Roma Olympics but was eliminated by a fall in round two. By occupation, Butts was a press operator.
