Basketball player Doudas Leydi Camara competed for the Senegal national team in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Camara was part of the Senegalese squad that won the 1968 Africa Championship with a 67–60 victory against hosts Morocco. The tournament served as the qualification pathway for the Mexico City Olympics, with both finalists advancing to the Games. Senegal finished 15th out of the 16 teams at the 1968 Olympics, once again beating Morocco in the final ranking match, with Camara scoring nine points in their 42–38 win. In 1972 Senegal won another Africa Championship title, this time beating Egypt, with both teams again securing their place at the München Olympics. History repeated itself with Senegal facing the team they had beaten in the African qualifier to see who would finish 15th and 16th. This time, however, the Egyptian team had withdrawn from the tournament ahead of the classification round following the events of the Munich massacre.
