At the 1908 London Olympics, Harry Spengler received a bye into the freestyle bantamweight quarter-final, but then lost to the eventual gold medallist, George Mehnert of the United States. Sprenger was a tool-maker and fitter, and most of his successes were at club level at the Hammersmith Amateur Wrestling Club. His older brother Charles was also a member of the same club.
