Biography

Joseph White was one of three Portsmouth-born athletes selected to represent Great Britain at the 1908 Olympics. A member of the Portsmouth Gymnastics Club, he competed in the featherweight class of the freestyle wrestling event, defeating William Jones of Olympic Amateur Wrestling Club in the first round. Later, he then lost his quarter-final match to eventual bronze medallist William McKie.

The son of an insurance agent, White was a stonemason by career. He briefly moved to Canada in 1910 and settled in Toronto, where he enlisted in the Canadian Forces during World War I. By the late 1930s, he had returned to England and lived in Brighton, Sussex.
