Biography

József Maróthy started wrestling for Törekvés in 1906, before later joining the Csepel, BAK and Húsiparosok clubs. He won the Hungarian Middleweight Championship in 1912, and in 1918 won the light-heavyweight title. Maróthy won a silver medal in the Greco-Roman 93.0 kg class at the 1911 European Championships, and a bronze in the 82.5 class at the unofficial championships of 1913. At the 1908 Olympics, following a second round victory over Britain’s William Wood Maróthy withdrew before his quarter-final bout. A butcher by trade, Maróthy retired from competitive sport in 1927.
