Biography

Andrea Gargano had a long career in wrestling and weightlifting. His two Olympic appearances came 12 years apart – in 1912 and 1924 in the middleweight division of Greco-Roman wrestling. In 1912, he reached round four, where he was defeated by fall after 2 minutes by Swede Edvin Fältström. In 1924, he quickly lost his first two bouts by fall, the second against Austrian fellow veteran Viktor Fischer.

Gargano was also second in his division at the 1919 Interallied Games in Joinville. Domestically, he won his first championship in 1911 in the 70 kg division representing Club Atletico Genovese. He repeated this feat in 1913, then for S.G.L. Cristoforo Colombo. In wrestling, he clinched three more titles: in 1919 (60 kg), 1923 and 1924 (58 kg). He also took four titles in weightlifting, all in the lightweight division: 1907, 1908, 1913 (for S.G.L. Cristoforo Colombo), and 1911 (for C.A. Genovese).
