Biography

Italian wrestler Angelo Gelsomini took up the sport in 1952 at a gym in Terni before joining the Fiamme Oro Sports Group in 1958. During the next year Gelsomini participated in multiple team wrestling tournaments across Europe including competitions in Finland, Bulgaria, and Yugoslavia. In 1959 and 1960 he won back-to-back national titles in the lightweight category, earning him a spot on the Italian Olympic team.

Gelsomini fought in the featherweight class at the Roma Olympics but lost his first two bouts and was eliminated. After the Olympics he won two more Italian lightweight titles (1961, 1965) and was awarded with the CONI bronze medal in 1966. Gelsomini continued to be involved in wrestling after his competitive career had ended and worked as a coach until he retired in 1992.
