After graduating from Kokushikan University, Masao Arai had a short but successful career in freestyle wrestling. Competing in the 57kg weight class, Arai won gold at both the All Japan Wrestling Championships and the World Championships in 1975. The following year he competed at the 1976 Montréal Olympics where he won bronze.
