Biography

Ragnar Svensson’s lengthy international career as a heavyweight Greco-Roman wrestler for Sweden began at the 1958 World Championships, where he just missed a medal in fourth. He made his Olympic début in 1960 in Rome, where he placed eighth, and once again missed a medal in fourth the following year at the World Championships. He had a very successful year in 1963, when he captured silver and both the Nordic and the World championships, but he only managed fifth at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. At the 1965 and 1966 World Championships, he was sixth.

Svensson became Nordic champion in 1966, however, and repeated this feat in 1968, the same year that he took bronze at the European Championships. He also took part in the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, but once again just missed a medal in fourth, before retiring from active competition.
