Biography

Magomedgasan Abushev from Dagestan, who took up wrestling in 1971 as a freestyler, had a very brief wrestling career. After winning World junior titles in 1977 (flyweight) and 1979 (featherweight), Abushev had his best year as a wrestler in 1980. First he won the European featherweight title and then, three months later, Olympic featherweight gold. He also won the World Cup in 1981. Domestically, Abushev earned his only Soviet title in 1984 as a lightweight. Abushev graduated from Dagestan State University with an economics degree in 1981 and later had a career as a businessman in Dagestan. From 1994-98 he worked with Derbentsky Oil Depot and from 1998-2003 was the deputy general director of unitary enterprise Dagvino. Since 2003 he has worked as an auditor of the Accounts Chamber of the Republic of Dagestan.
