Biography

On 23 July 1952, Rəşid Məmmədbəyov became the first Azerbaijani athlete to win an Olympic medal, when he defeated Khashaba Jhadav of India in the sixth round of freestyle bantamweight but lost to Shohachi Ishii of Japan in the final round to earn a silver medal. The 1952 Olympics were his only international tournament. Domestically, Məmmədbəyov never won a Soviet title, but won five freestyle bantamweight silvers (1947, 1949, 1953, 1954, 1956). Since 2009 an international youth tournament in wrestling has been held in his honor in Bakı, Azerbaijan.
