Hans Christiansen’s father was a lawyer but he studied pharmacy. He ran the “Swan” pharmacy in Oslo and developed a laboratory connected with it. His son Eigil later took over his business. With his first wife Alma Deodata (née Eckell), whom he married in 1892, he had two sons and one daughter. One year after her death in 1923, he married again. His second wife was the paintress Susanna Augusta Iversen, who adopted the artist’s name Sussi Steigen.
At the 1912 Olympic sailing events he was – together with his son Eigil – a member of the crew of the Norwegian 6 metres yacht Sonja II placing fifth in both races and overall.
