Born into a family of merchants Kurts Klāsens first studied at the Department of Mechanics at the Riga Polytechnic Institute from 1911 to 1918, before studying at the Faculty of Mechanics at the University of Latvia in 1922. Six years later Klāsens competed in the one-person heavyweight dinghy sailing event at the Amsterdam Olympics, where he placed 10th overall. In 1939 he emigrated to Germany with his family, where he lived until his death in 1973.
