Nilo Dzib was born in the municipality of Chichimilá but moved to the island of Cozumel off the eastern coast of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula where he became a pioneer in the sport of windsurfing. Dzib won gold at the 1983 Pan American Games in Caracas in the wind glider class, which also earned him the National Sports Award. Windsurfing made its Olympic début at the 1984 Los Angeles Games as a demonstration event, before becoming a medal event at the 1988 Seoul Games. Dzib competed at both the LA and Seoul Olympics, finishing 11th and 38th, respectively. In 1990 he won silver in the mistral class at the Central American and Caribbean Games in Mexico.
