A lifelong sportsman at the local, national, and international level, Argentinean sailor Emilio Homps got his start with Regatas La Marina in the city of Tigre, inspired to enter the sport by his father, but eventually became associated with the nearby Yacht Club Olivos during the late 1930s. His reputation as a racer grew and he was eventually chosen to represent Argentina in the 6 metres, mixed event at the 1948 Summer Olympics with a ship, the Djinn, provided by the country’s navy. There, alongside his teammates, he came in third place or better in every scoring race (one fourth place finish was discarded as the lowest placement) and won races five and seven, which secured them a silver medal. At the 1951 Pan American Games he won a silver medal in the star class with Jorge Emilio Brauer. In addition to his sailing exploits, he was also an accomplished swimmer, rower, and rugby player at who won national awards in all of these endeavors. In 2006, the council of Vicente López awarded him a “Diploma de Honor” for his achievements in sport.
