Biography

As a student at the University of Toronto, Dave Howard studied business and participated in sailing, tennis, and squash. During World War II, he served as an officer with the Royal Canadian Navy in the Battle of the Atlantic, escorting supply ships travelling from North American to Great Britain and eventually reaching the rank of Lieutenant. After the conflict he was a member of the Royal Canadian Yacht Club and represented Canada in international sailing tournaments. His most notable appearance came at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, where he competed in the Dragon Class alongside his brother Clifford and Don Tytler. There they had a best finish of third in the fifth race, although overall they placed eighth among sixteen crews. Dave Howard also won the Canada Cup in 1954. In his later years, he kept busy restoring boats and served as Commodore of the RCYC. He was made a member of the Canadian Sailing Hall of Fame in 2018.
