Biography

Polish sailor Andrzej Iwiński competed in several classes throughout his career but enjoyed his greatest success in the Flying Dutchman. Iwiński began sailing in the Cadet class in 1959, before moving to the Hornet in 1963 and finally the Flying Dutchman in 1967. He won his first Polish title in the latter in 1968 to earn a place at the Mexico City Olympics. At the Games he competed with Ludwik Raczyński but the pair finished down in 24th. He continued to compete during the 1970s, winning two further Polish titles in 1974 and 1979.

In 1980 Iwiński returned to the Olympics, once again teaming with Raczyński for the Moskva Games. This time the pair improved on their previous performance in Mexico to finish 11th, although only 15 teams took part. Despite the disappointment at the Olympics, Iwiński dominated in the Flying Dutchman at the Polish championship, winning 12 consecutive titles from 1980 to 1991. In addition to sailing he also ran his own textile manufacturing company where he made Polar knitwear.
