Biography

At home and abroad, John Kerr found great success in sailing’s Soling Class. He took up the sport at the age of seven and competed at his first tournament, the Canadian Youth Championships in Hamilton, in 1967. He earned his first Canadian title in 1973 and followed it up with victories in 1975, 1978, 1980, 1983, and 1984. Along the way he also won the 1978, 1982, and 1983 European Championships and captured a bronze medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics, alongside Hans Fogh and Steve Calder. He also served as an instructor with the national team for a number of years and worked at Fogh’s sail-making shop in Toronto. A 1976 graduate of the University of Western Ontario, he entered York University in 1978 and spent the next four years earning a business degree. Since then he has served in numerous positions, including director of the Royal Canadian Yacht Club, and has worked with his father’s company, Kerrwil Publications Limited (which focuses on boating publications) since 1984.
