Yevgeny Lomach’s father was the German-born Eduard Avgustovich Lomach (Eduard Heinrich Lomatsch), who owned the Dagmar Hotel in St. Petersburg. Yevgeny started sailing for the Vyborg Sailing Society before moving to St. Petersburg. Yevgeny’s brother Eduard Eduardovich was a naval pilot, who later went into exile. Yevgeny later lived and died in the United States under his original given name Ernest together with his wife Olga Vasilievna.
The father and both sons were active in the Imperial Yacht Club in St. Petersburg. They owned a yacht named Vilya but were particularly active as helmsmen in regattas steering yachts of Vyacheslav Kuzmichev and others. At the 1912 Olympics, Yevgeny Lomach competed as a member of the crew of the yacht Norman in the 8 metres class placing fourth and fifth in the two races.
