Biography

Giuseppe Milone, known affectionately as Picchio, was an Italian sailing skipper. Despite being just 22-years-old at the time, he took part at the 1972 München Olympics in the Soling class and then moved to the Tempest class the following year, finishing sixth at the World Championships. After winning Italian titles in 1974 (Porto Rotondo) and 1975 (Napoli), he won the 1975 World Championships with the boat Cocker, alongside Roberto Mottola di Amato, and placed third at the pre-Olympic regatta in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. Milone also competed at the 1976 Montréal Olympics in Tempest.

In the following years Milone returned to the Soling class and won Italian titles in 1982 and 1983. In September 1986 he won a silver medal behind Vicente Brun at the Capri World Championships in the Star Class, again accompanying Mottola.
