A keen yachtsman, Potter was a member of the committee of the Wootton Creek Sailing Club and was the sailing secretary of the newly-formed Cowes Corinthian Yacht Club (1952). In the 1960s Potter was regularly seen sailing on the Solent in Dragon class boats with Bruce Banks including Whirlwind which the two men owned.
