Biography

Stanley Potter started work as a 17-year-old clerk with the Post Office before becoming a wireless operator. He joined the Royal Navy and served in World War II. Potter stayed in service after the War and attained the rank of lieutenant-commander.

A keen yachtsman, Potter was a member of the committee of the Wootton Creek Sailing Club and was the sailing secretary of the newly-formed Cowes Corinthian Yacht Club (1952). In the 1960s Potter was regularly seen sailing on the Solent in Dragon class boats with Bruce Banks including Whirlwind which the two men owned. He enjoyed a lot of success with Leprecahun, however, which Potter and Banks co-owned with Tony Somers. Potter competed at both the 1952 Helsinki and 1956 Melbourne Olympics with Banks in the Star class.
