Biography

Educated at Sevenoaks School, James Ramus was a well-known Romney Marsh hops and fruit farmer based at Iden on the Kent/East Sussex border. He ran the family farm with his father and brother Nick, who was well-known as a rally-cross driver in the area.

James chose racing yachts as opposed to cars and as his sport and was a member of the Whitstable Yacht Club, where he teamed up with Slotty Dawes. The pair won the 1960 National Flying Dutchman Championship, and at that year’s Roma Olympics the duo won race two and were in a medal position up to race five, before eventually finishing seventh.

Ramus teamed up with Stuart Jardine in 1961 and won that year´s National Flying Dutchman Championships. The following year they finished third in the world Flying Dutchman Championships in Florida. Ramus appeared in his second Olympics in 1968 when he finished tenth in the Star class.
