Austrian sailor Ernst partnered his brother Kurt Seidl at the 1972 München Olympics when the sailing events were held at Kiel. The pair sailed the two-person heavyweight dinghy Flying Dutchman class and placed 18th. Ernst returned to the Olympics four years later at Montréal when the sailing events were held at Kingston, Ontario. He then partnered Johann Eisl and finished 13th, again in the Flying Dutchman event.
Ernst Seidl won 28 Austrian national titles in various boat classes. He was a trained merchandiser and founded his own sail-making company at Salzburg in 1973. His daughter Andrea took over the business in 2010.
