Biography

Géza Kardos started playing basketball competitively in 1935 for the BSZKRT team where he won the championship six times. In 1946 Kardos won another championship gold medal for Bp Kinizsi, and in 1947 for Postás SE. Between 1936 and 1948 he played in the Hungarian national team 38 times. He was a member of the team which participated in the sport for the first time at the Olympics (1948, London). At the Games the Hungarian team defeated Italy, Canada, and the host Great Britain, but lost to Uruguay and the group winners Brazil after extra time, so they did not advance to the top eight. The Hungarian management did not allow the team to play for 9th-16th place, so due to the lack of play, the team was automatically ranked 16th. Kardos also played in three European Championships. His outstanding achievement was the bronze medal at the European Championships in Geneva in 1946. His wife, Klára Kucsera, was a national handball player.

Kardos graduated at the Budapest University of Economics. From 1936 to 1948 he worked at the National Credit Institute, and in 1948, he was a head of department there. From 1949 to 1957 he was an employee of the National Planning Office, and from 1957 to 1968 he was Deputy Minister of Finance.
