Biography

The Strauch family was of German descent and owned almost a dozen apartment buildings in St. Petersburg. They were in the pharmaceutical and medical business as scientists or doctors and at the time still held German citizenship. Philipp Strauch attended the Wiedemann Gymnasium in Dorpat (now Tartu) in Estonia. From 1879-89 he studied medicine at the local Imperial University. In 1892 he married Antonie Haller from Estonia in Reval (now Tallinn). They had two daughters and one son, who also studied medicine in Dorpat but died young.

Strauch spent the years 1890-91 in Wien (Vienna) and Berlin. He then worked as a doctor in St. Petersburg and was head of the outpatient clinic of the Imperial Humanitarian Society until 1918. His final years he spent as consultant at the German Alexander Hospital.

Strauch was a member of the crew of the “Gallia II” in the 10-metre class at the 1912 Olympic Games. In the match race for the second place they lost to the Finnish yacht “Nina” to win bronze.
