Tito Steiner was born in Paraguay in May 1952 before moving to Argentina with his family when he was six. Steiner took up track and field athletics from a young age and eventually focused on the decathlon, winning his first national title in 1972. He won three further national titles (1973, 1976, 1978) and became the first Argentine decathlete to break the 7,000 points barrier. At the South American Championships he won silver in the event in 1974 before winning gold in 1975 and 1977.
In 1975 Steiner finished fourth in the decathlon at the Pan American Games, with the hope of him winning a medal at the upcoming Olympics. At the 1976 Montréal Games, however, he had a disappointing performance finishing 22nd overall. Three years later he had a bit of redemption when he won silver at the 1979 Pan American Games in San Juan. The same year Steiner set a national record in the event at the Texas Relays in Austin, United States, with the record still standing at the time of his death in May 2024.
Personal Best: Dec – 8291 (1983).
