Biography

Ian Reed won gold for Australia in the discus in his international début at the 1950 British Empire Games. In 1950 he moved to America to study chemical engineering at Stanford University and competed regularly for the university in 1951 and 1952, although he never placed at the NCAA Meet. Reed threw the discus at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics but did not make the final.

Reed won four Australian discus titles (1948-50, 1954) and set 10 national records. In the 1950s he settled in California and he became a naturalized US citizen in 1965. Reed later returned to competition as a masters’ athlete and set several masters’ world records. He was ranked world #1 in the 85-89 age group in 2013-16. In September 2017 he set an age group 90-94 world record of 28.49 metres at the San Diego Senior Games. Reed also took up tennis in later life and competed in age group competition in that sport.
