Sprinter Andreas Berger was Austrian champion in 100 metres (1984-1989, 1991), 200 metres (1984-89), and 4×100 relay (1982-89, 1991). He participated in the 1988 Seoul and 1992 Barcelona Summer Olympics. In 1988 Berger failed to qualify for the semi-finals over 100 and 200 metres. In 1992, he was disqualified in his 100 metres heat after two false starts, and over 200 metres reached the second round but failed to advance to the semi-finals. With the 4x100 metres relay the Austrian team he placed seventh.
In 1989, Berger reached the semi-finals of the World Indoor Championships and achieved arguably his greatest international success at the Grand Prix meeting in New Delhi by winning the 100 metres defeating, among others, the great Carl Lewis. In 1989, Berger also became European 60 metres indoor champion .
In 1993, Berger was convicted of doping with methandienone in the run-up to the World Championships in Stuttgart. He was banned for four years along with his relay compatriots Thomas Renner, Franz Ratzenberger, and Gernot Kellermayr. The ban was later reduced to two years.
Berger later became self-employed consultant and events manager and was the inventor of the Red Bull 400, a 400-metres uphill race on various ski jumps. He also organized several other running events in Austria.
