Biography

István Lovrics started playing basketball in the colours of Pécsi VSK in 1943. In 1946 Lovrics played in the first division of the Hungarian championship that resumed after the war. In 1947 he moved to Budapest where he started the Technical University and transferred to the KaSE team.

Between 1947 and 1948 Lovrics played 17 times for the Hungarian national team. In 1948 he won the Balkan Championship and was able to play in the London Olympics. At the Olympic tournament, the Hungarian team defeated Italy, Canada, and host nation Great Britain, but lost in overtime to Uruguay and group winners Brazil, thus failing to advance to the top eight. The Hungarian leadership did not allow the team to play for the 9th–16th places, so due to the lack of matches, the team was automatically ranked 16th. Lovrics played in every match and scored a total of 32 points.

In 1949 Lovrics left Hungary and settled in Switzerland. He lived here for only a few years, before moving to Barcelona, Spain where he later became the director of a chemical factory. During this period of his life, tennis became his main sport. He was so good at the game that he even won the Spanish championship. In 1967 he moved to Canada, where he worked as an architect. Tennis remained his passion with him being a member of several clubs and entered smaller tournaments.
