Biography

Agberto Guimarães competed at the 1980 and 1984 Olympics, just missing a medal in 1980 with a fourth-place finish in the 800 metres at Moscow. Guinarães’ greatest international meet was the 1983 Pan American Games when he won gold medals in the 800 and 1,500 metres and a silver medal in the 4x400 relay. He also won bronze medals in the 800 and 1,500 at the 1979 Pan Ams. After his retirement as a competitor, Guimarães served as technical director of the Brazilian Athletics Confederation from 1995-97. He became very active in sports administration, serving with the Organizing Committee of the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro and later with the Organizing Committee for the 2016 Olympic Games.

Personal Bests: 400 – 46.34 (1980); 800 – 1:43.63 (1984); 1500 – 3:39.00 (1984).
