Biography

Ethel Smith was born into poverty in Toronto and quit school after the eighth grade to go to work in Toronto’s Garment District when she was only 14. But after work she would play every sport she could. In 1924 she won a footrace for women at the field day sponsored by the Beaches Businessman’s Association, and this led her to a career in athletics. She would eventually win one Canadian Championship, the 1927 220 yards. She competed after the Amsterdam Olympics, at the 1929 Millrose Games, and finished her career at the 1929 Ontario Championships in August, when she won the 60 yards.

Personal Best: 100 – 12.3e (1928).
