Having taken up track athletics seriously in 1928, after joining Toronto’s Central YMCA, Harold Gallop had a successful running career in the late 1920s and early 1930s that culminated in his representing Canada at the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics. There, he competed in the 3,000 metres steeplechase, but dropped out in his first race and was unable to complete the heats. Shortly thereafter, he took up a new vocation, ballroom dancing, and moved to New York to perform as a professional in that field. Teaming up with his Torontonian wife Jean Collette Hemsworth, the duo dropped their surnames, professionally and legally, and performed musical comedy as “Collette and Barry” throughout the 1930s and 1940s.
Personal Best: 3000S – unknown.
