Biography

Frank Hughes was born in Ardrossan, Scotland and spent the first two decades of his life there. He briefly worked as a policeman before coming to Canada in 1912 to join his father in Hamilton, Ontario. Hughes married Mary Yates in that same year, and began a career as a merchant. Active in athletic affairs of the city since the early 1920s, Hughes was selected in early May 1928 for the Canadian Olympic team to run in the marathon in Amsterdam. There, he finished 43rd in a field of 69 competitors and fourth out of the five Canadians competing. Before the Olympics, Hughes also won the Detroit Marathon that year, posting a time of 2-58:20. He died at the age of 84 at Guelph, Ontario in 1974.
