Biography

In his youth Billy Maynes was a decent track and field athlete who competed as a sprinter. In 1924 Maynes was part of the Canadian quartet that finished fourth in the 4 × 400 metres relay at the Paris Olympics. After the Games he went to England to study economics and political science at University College, Oxford where he became a Rhodes Scholar in 1926. From there he returned home to Canada, graduating with honours from the University of Toronto in commerce and finance. Maynes worked in the news department of the Times Globe newspaper from World War II until his death in 1966. He also served as the treasurer of the board of commissioners of the Saint John General Hospital in New Brunswick for 15 years.
