Biography

Born in the remote Scottish village of Balvicar in 1881, Archie McDiarmid later moved to Vancouver where he competed in track and field athletics. McDiarmid participated in throwing events, which earned him a place on the Canadian Olympic team for the 1920 Antwerpen Games. He narrowly missed out on a medal in the 56-pound weight throw when he came fourth in the final. He also finished ninth in the hammer throw and had the honour of being the flagbearer for Canada at the Opening Ceremony. Due to his size McDiarmid was also entered into the heavyweight boxing tournament at the Olympics but did not start in the event. Ten years after the Olympics he finished sixth in the hammer throw at the 1930 British Empire Games in Hamilton, Ontario.
