Biography

​​Gerda Martín was born and raised in Osorno. One of the top performers in the javelin throw in Chile in the 1940s and early 1950s, having won national titles in both 1947 and 1952, Martín was chosen to represent her country at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics as a member of the athletics delegation. Unfortunately, she did not advance past the qualifying round, finishing 18th in a field of 21 competitors. She later married and had a son and daughter, and retired to Padre Hurtado in Talagante Province, near Santiago.
