Biography

Spanish track and field athlete Jesús Oyarbide specialised in middle and long-distance running events and won multiple national titles. Oyarbide won the 5,000 metres title at the Spanish Athletics Championships in 1926 and 1927, and finished as the runner-up in the following two years. In 1928 he broke the Spanish records in the 2,000 and 5,000 metres, with the times standing until 1933 and 1941, respectively. The same year Oyarbide set a Biscayan record in the 3,000 metres, which stood until 1955. He won the title at the Spanish Cross-Country Championships in 1929, with him finishing in second place on three occasions (1927–28, 1930). Oyarbide ran in the 5,000 metres at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics but did not advance from the heats. He was only 31-years-old when he died in March 1933.
