Estonian athlete and sports journalist Karl Laas competed at distances from 100 metres to the marathon, with his running career spanning from 1923 until 1948. From 1928 to 1930 Laas became a three-time national champion in the marathon, in addition to a 10,000 metres title, and set an Estonian record in the 20,000 metres. In 1928 he also ran in the marathon at the Amsterdam Olympics but was forced to withdraw from the race due to a leg injury.
During World War II Laas was mobilised into the Red Army in 1941, fighting in several battles for the Estonian Rifle Corps. After the war he continued to work as a journalist in addition to writing poems. Laas spent about ten years of his life working in the editorial office of Estonian Radio.
