Biography

Finnish track and field athlete Lauri Kalima specialised in the high jump and won the national title in the event in 1939 and 1942. Kalima was selected to compete at the 1936 Berlin Olympics where he tied for sixth with three other athletes who all cleared 1.94 metres. A month after the Olympics he set a Finnish record with 2.01 metres that stood until 1963. In 1938 he won bronze in the high jump at the European Athletics Championships in Paris. After his athletics career Kalima worked as a banker, lawyer, and member of the local city councils.
