Biography

Aarne Aatami “Arvo” Peussa was a Finnish track and field athlete who represented Viipurin Urheilijat in Helsinki during the 1920s. Peussa specialised in middle-distance running events and usually competed in the 1,500 metres. At the Finnish athletic championships he won silver in the 5 x 2,000 metres relay in 1921 before winning gold in the same event the following year. In 1924 he was the national champion in the 1,500 metres before winning his final medal at the championships in 1926, with a silver in the 4 x 1,500 metres relay. At the 1924 Paris Olympics he finished in ninth place in his favoured event with compatriot Paavo Nurmi winning the gold medal. Peussa fought for Finland against Nazi Germany in the Continuation War where he was killed in action near to Salmi in July 1941.
