Biography

Audrey Bennett was the daughter of a London Metropolitan police officer. She became a good standard high jumper but was unfortunate to be around at the same time as those other top female high jumpers of the day, Thelma Hopkins and Dorothy Tyler. Bennett never won a WAAAs title but was third behind Hopkins and Tyler in 1955 and runner up to Mary Bignal-Rand in 1957. In between she competed at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics and finished joint 16th. Just before going to Melbourne, Bennett set her personal best 1.65 metres in beating Olga Modrachová in the inter-city match between Prague and London.

At the 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Cardiff, Bennett finished in sixth place. By occupation, she worked in the drawing office of an engineering company in north London.

Personal Best: HJ – 1.65 (1956).
