Biography

An Essex-county runner, Dave Chapman never won a senior AAA title but was runner-up in the 3,000 metres steeplechase in 1960 and 1962 to Eric Shirley and Maurice Herriott respectively. Chapman was selected for the 1960 Roma Olympics but was eliminated in his opening heat.

Shortly before the Olympics, Chapman was involved in a bizarre race, reminiscent of the 1932 Olympic steeplechase final, when he beat Mike Herriott, Michael Palmer and John Disley in the final event of the 1960 Inter-Counties Championship. Chapman´s victory secured a half-a-point victory for Essex over Surrey to capture the championship but it was discovered that due to a mix-up, all the runners, except the first four, ran an extra lap.

Personal Best: 3000S – 8:46.4 (1962).
