Biography

Mike Hogan attended Winchester College public school before winning a scholarship to Trinity College, Oxford in 1960. An excellent runner at Winchester, Hogan was also a member of their football (soccer) first XI. On going to Oxford, Hogan concentrated on athletics and in 1961 was the AAA junior high hurdles champion, and the following year was the inaugural winner of the revived AAA indoor 60 yards hurdles title. Also in 1962, Hogan made his Great Britain international début in the indoor match against West Germany as a replacement for Bob Birrell, who pulled out with tonsilitis.

To make 1962 a truly memorable year for Hogan, he became an athletics Blue at Oxford. He would appear in three more Varsity matches and in 1964 was the president of the Oxford University Athletic Club. That same year he won the British Universities´ 400 metres hurdles title. Internationally, Hogan won the 400 metres hurdles silver medal at the 1963 Summer Universiade at Porto Alegre, Brazil. He also won a bronze in the 110 hurdles. The following year, Hogan went to the Tokyo Olympics but was eliminated after finishing fourth in his first-round 400 hurdles heat.

Personal Best: 400H – 51.3 (1964).
