Biography

Apart from success with his club, the Surrey Walking Club, the career of Bert Martineau centred around the 1948 season when he finished fifth in the 50 km walk at the London Olympics. Also that year, he finished second to Rex Whitlock in the Road Walking Association 20-mile championship, and was third in the 50km championship. He was also second, to the 38-year-old Whitlock, in the Surrey Walking Club’s annual 52-mile London-to-Brighton walk later that year (having been third in 1947).

Personal Best: 50kmW – 4-39:40 (1948).
